THE LONDON CONFERENCE

I noticed in the paper a- few days ago some little mention as to wbo is to represent New ' Zealand at the forthcoming World Economic Conference shortly to be held, and whether it is to be Mr. Forbes and Mr. Coatee or Mr. Forbes, or Mr- Coates (writes ."Commonsense"). . ; Why in the name of eommonsense should the' country, more especially ■ in times such as these, be put to the heavy expense of sending two, or even one of the representatives - mentioned, with .the attendant staff? The harassed taxpayer has heavy enough burden to face already, without being punished. with such - additional, and I take it *.unwarranted expense. The bill for Ottawa was quite sufficient, and co far we have yet to see adequate result. If, however, representation of New Zealand is necessary, and it may be so, have we not in- our High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Wilford, one eminently fitted to carry out the duties? Sir Thomas is a gentleman of experience, ability, and high standing, besides being a most capable speaker;and surely it should be his commission to attend the Conference.

Complaint is made by "Taxpayer of Rolleston Street" of the condition of that street. On one side there is no footpath, but red clay, and storm water runs down the road instead of the gutter. The writer suggests that Rolleston Street, where rates arc high, is entitled to concrete channelling, tar-scaling, and footpaths as obtained by lower-rated areas.
