NATIONAL WORKS

TO RELIEVE POSITION

LOCAL BODIES' LIST

A meeting of representatives of local bodies in Ihe Wellington district was held yesterday afternoon in the Mayor's room to receive the report prepared by a committee of delegates from all' the bodies concerning works which may be undertaken to relieve unemployment this winter. The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), who presided, pointed out that the list did not set out the works'in the order of importance irrespective of districts or the bodies concerned. The idea had been to find works that could be recommended to the Government to be undertaken under its control by the Public Works Department. Clearly some of the works on the list could not be undertaken as public works, being of interest almost exclusively to the local bodies in the districts concerned. He suggested that the list be thinned down to works of a national character, the .others to be dealt with where possible by the local bodies. After discussion, the list was dealt with on the' spot, and tho following works suggested by the local bodies mentioned were approved as of sufficient national importance to be placed before the Government with the sugi gestion that they be done as pubbc works:— Wellington City Council. —Planting at Kaitoto; improvements to alignments and regrading of the Old Porirua Boad; Wadestown-Ngaio Road, as a new outlet to Wellington to link up with' the Khandallah-Johnsonville Boad. Lower Hutt Borough Council.— New road Khandallah to Johnsonville (landowners will give up the necessary laud). Hutt County Council. —(1) Formation and construction of 90 chains of road to connect Paremata Bridge with Plimmerton in . view of new traffic bridge being built at later date. The land for this road hasr already been donated. Road to be continued later to Pukerua Bay and perhaps to Paekakariki. (2) Further widening of Western Hutt Road to Haywards from Mclling and continuation of Western Hutt Road north of present terminus I at Haywards, and construction of new, road and bridge over Hutt River to, link up with Main East Road at Silverstream. Petone Borough Council. —Road extensions, Horokiwi and Korokbro. Now under construction.' Work to be continued; tree-planting of the Harbour and Hutt Valley hills. Makara County Council. —Proposed new stock louto from Johnsonville to | City Abattoirs. Miscellaneous. —The Government to bo requested to proceed with the work of erecting public buildings in Wellington, including the new building for the Government Life Insurance and new railway facilities at Lambton. A discussion upon the point to which the Paremata-Plimmerton-Paekakariki Road could be undertaken with advantage led to no definite decision. The Mayor promised to arrange an interview for the deputation to the Minister of Public Works-.
