HIDES FOR CANADA
DEVELOPMENT OF TRADE
Hidesi and skins arc one of the classes of commodities which afford prospects for development of export trade to Canada. During the past year the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Canada has been working in close association with tho Canadian Tanners'- Association in effecting arrangements for increased purchases of New Zealand hides and skins. A considerable volume of business has been arranged, and shipments of heavy quantities are in prospect. One matter which has militated against tlie development of tho export trade to Canada, has been the high rate of freight, increased, in effect, by tho cost of the exchange surcharge. Representations in this connection have been made to the Overseas Shipowners' Committee by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (flic Hon. R. Masters), and after reconsideration of tho position the committee has now advised the Minister that it has agreed to make a reduction at least for a. period of six months) from March 1,- 1933. The new rate on hides and skins to Canada will be the same as to the United Kingdom. It is confidently expected that this reduction in tho freight rates will be a, material factor in still further increasing the good business which has been established.
