REMARKABLE WOMEN
THIRTY YEARS AS BANKERS
Two women, who made history by undertaking the management of a savings bank when women in such jobs were unknown 'retired recently after 30 years of remarkable work (states an English exchango). They are sisters, Misses I, M. and G. A. Hardwick, who were actuaries at the Grantham branch of the York County Savings Bank. Since they succeeded their father ill the work 30 years ago they have increased the number of depositors from 3500 to 6855, and the amount of deposits from £131,000 to £350,000. The amazing progress made by the bank during their management was disclosed by the sisters—very modestly. The bank's management has been entrusted to members of the family for the past 67 years. The sisters had had no previous experience when appointed. The appointment was considered a daring experiment, and even today women actuaries are rare. The Grantham Bank began to boom, said the sisters, when amalgamated with the York County Bank in 1917, this bringing about greater facilities, extended business hours, and a higher rate of interest. "We tried to encourage children to be thrifty through the penny banks and schools," said one. ""We had a lot of depositors who came regularly with small amounts, which, when they reached a good sum, -were generally taken out to buy a car or a house." Miss I. M. Hardwiek said: "It has been extraordinarily interesting, work, and 30 years of the greatest happiness. A trustees savings bank is so very interesting because you can help people in so many ways and specially by advising them." Women nowadays in Britain play a bigger part in arranging their own weddings, according to the experiences of 1 carriage registrars.
