The Bank -of ■ New Zealand, • 'Produce Department, has received the following advice from its London office under date May 9:—"The sales have ' opened with strong competition and large attendance of buyers. There is an active demand by all branches of the trade. Compared with the closing rates of last series, merino is M, fine crossbred %d to 9id, medium crossbred %d, coarse crossbred JAd per lb, all higher." ALL SECTIONS OPERATE. Murray, Roberts, and Co., Ltd., are in receipt of the following wool market cable-, gram from their London agents, dated May 9:—"Sales have opened with a good tone, competition keen; all sections operating freely. Compared with last London sale's closing rates: Scoured merino, none offered; greasy merino advanced 7% to 10 per cent.; crossbred greasy fine advanced V/a per cent;; crossbred greasy medium and coarse, except inferior descriptions, advanced 5 to Vk per cent.; crossßred scoured advanced 5 per cent.; slipe crossbredl advanced 5 to 7% per cent." Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report having .received cable advice from their London house regarding the London wool sales, reading as follows:— "Wool sales opened to a larger attendance of buyers than usual." Continental and Bradford buyers were the chief operators. Competition was animated for an average selection of/wools. We qouto the' following average range of prices:—Greasy halfbred, 50/56's, yielding 67 per cent., 9%d----per lb; three-quarter-bred, 48/50's, 73 per cent., 69id; fine crossbred, 46/48's, 74 1 per cent., 5%d; medium crossbred, 44/ 46's, 75 per cent., sd; crossbred, 40/445,; 76 per cent, 4%d. Crossbred lambs/ 46/50 s, yielding 75 per. cent., Bd. Austra- ■ lian merino prices were 10 per cent, higher. Scoured . arid sl,iped wools were 5 per cent, to 7% per cent, higher." CHARACTER OF CATALOGUES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited', has received the following advice from its London house, dated May 9: —"Wool sales: There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales today, competition by Home and Continental buyers being active. Prices as compared with the close of the preceding series ruled %d per lb higher for crossbred slipe, medium, and coarse greasy crossbred, higher %d to Id per lb for scoured crossbred, and higher. Id per lb : for greasy merino. The opening catalogues were fairly representative." , UPWARD TENDENCY. R. G. Anderson; Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from London:—"Sale opened ; today, market strong with upward tendency. Prices ruling for fine crossbreds show an increase of 10 per cent., while medium and coarse crossbreds are 5 per cent, to 7% per cent. dearer." .
