CITY MISSION

APPEAL FOR SUPPORT

The annual meeting of the Wellington City Mission was held at the Mission Hall last evening. There was a good attendance of members and supporters. Mr. James W. Henderson presided. Addresses reviewing the work of the organisation during the past year were delivered by the chairman, the secretary (Mr. Russell W. Kemp), and the Rev. T. Fielden Taylor, missioner. Tho. report and statement of accounts were adopted. The various committees wore set up, and Mr. Henderson was re-elected chairman. : ■ The addr.oss of the missionor, which was mainly on the lines of his report, published in "The Post," dealt in dotail with the various activities of the mission. In his reference: to the splendid assistance given by the mission helpers, Mr. Fielden Taylor remarked that ■•the.-basic structure 6f the mission :was •■ tlie . spiritual."Without our chapel, personally* I would be lost," he said. "The older I get, the more sure I am that no social work can live very long with thorough success if divorced from the spiritual side. You will read in the report of the various spiritual .advances that we have made during the last .twelve months. This spiritual side is still advancing. It cannot stand still." He mentioned that in his opinion the most important work was that done among the girls and boys. The mission dealt with about one thousand young people each year. When he persuaded the trustees to take over the men's .shelter,, he.realised that ho had laid upon them...a logd..very difficult to carry; but' he was' now' sure that it had come to stay, and the organisation would have to battle through the year as well as it was able. .Referring to the finances, Mr. Melden Taylor said that in consequence of the existing depression the additional calls upon the funds of the mission had been unusually heavy; still, they, looked-for-ward with hope to receiving increased financial support. He hoped that the fair to be held later in the year would be an important factor in maintaining their finances. Ho concluded by thanking all those workers, paid and unpaid, for their valuable services. During the evening a number of musical items were given by the Aeolian Quartet (Messrs. Small} Mayall, Watson, and Hall), and a tenor solo was sung ; by Mr. Kenneth Small. . ;
