SUEZ GANAL TOLLS
BARRIER TO TRADE
FRANCE HOLDS BALANCE
. (Beceived May B,' 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 7. The "Sunday Express" describes'the Suez Canal as one of. the greatest barriers to Empire prosperity, -as the British Treasury has persistently failed to support shipowners' demands for a reduction in the tolls. "Fifty-six per cent.' of the shipping using the' canal is British, and only six per cent. French, yet France holds the balance of power. The only hope of reduc; tion is if the British Government would appeal to Egypt, which is empowered to call an international conference on the subject.
