FAIR TO FINE
The meteorological forecant statee' that except for protected portions in eastern district*, strong south-westerly winds to gales will - prevail,, but later will decrease somewhat. The weather will be mainly fair to nne in'eastern districts, otherwise it will be equally and changeable, with showers at times. Temperatures will be cold. With an intense westerly depression covering the Dominion, the weather during the weekend in most districts was unsettled and showery, strong winds between west and south-west prevailing. About Cook Strait and parts of the East Coast, however; it was mostly fair to fine. Temperatures fell as low as 29.13 inches yesterday in the far south, but have since risen, the last of the Teccnt long series of lows having apparently moved to the east of the Dominion.^ Heavy rain was experienced last night in districts with a westerly aspect, and in the interior of the North Island. Hail has fallen at places, and for the past two days there has been considerable snowfall in the ranges of the South Island. Wellington city, therefore, may be considered fortunate, for it was still fine and pleasant this morning, as well as along the east coast of the North Island. Elsewhere, squally and unsettled conditions have prevailed. At 9 a.m. today south-west gales were reported in places, especially in the far north and south, and on the east coast of the South Island. At Wellington there were heavy rain showers on Saturday morning, and the weather later' cleared, southerly winds backing tp a light northerly in tho afternoon. On Sunday if was line and pleasant, with a moderate to' fresh north-west wind. The sunshine totalled 8.3 hours. Auckland experienced unsettled, squally, and showery weather, with strong west to south-west winds during both Saturday and Sunday. ' ' Christchurch had mostly sunny weather on Saturday, with a fresh west-north-west wind, and it became overcast in the evening. On Sunday a cold north-east wind blew, and the weather was fair to cloudy. In Dunedin it was dttll on Saturday, and heavy showers fell in the late afternoon and during the night, with hail at times. . Sunday morning was sunny, and the afternoon was dull. Rain again fell tnere last night. The wind was variable between north-west and sputhwe»t, and ftrong at times. _
