BRITISH COLUMBIA'S PACE

As aA exhibition o£ jumping, the Manawapou Hurdles was a poor affair. All five horses fenced very badly, and, strangely enough, it wag left to the novice High Falutin' to clear his hurdles best. Ganpat made tha pace all the way, and his speed on the flat ensured him a comfortable win, although, he ran down , almost every obstacle. At the home bend High Falutin' and Easterly closed on Ganpat, but the latter had too much in hand, and Went on to .win by a couple or' lengths from High Falutin', with a similar distance back to Easterly. Invietus and Green Linnet were both well back. The former cut himself about when he nearly fell at the second' hurdle, and Green Linnet shaped well for a novice. High Falutin'showed considerable improvement, and Easterly failed to concede the weight in the heavy going. Ganpat may win again shortly. WON AT LAST. The mudlarks did best in the Ngamutu Hack, for which Beaconsfield was a firm favourite. He looked a potential winner at the home turn, for his rider was apparently sitting pretty at this stage just behind Kins Win and Tehtcall, with March Alone close up. King Win was beaten inside the distance, and the favourite momentarily looked like winning, but he stopped quickly. March Alone then came along with a warm challenge to Tentcal], and he beat her, going away, by three-parts of ia length, while King Win was two and a half lengths back, just in front of Beaconsfijld. Arikitea was next, March Alone was well suited by the conditions, and he outstayed Tentcall, who was made a lot of use of. King Win pulled hard out in front, and ran himself to a standstill. There were only four runners in the 'Mokoia Handicap, and the odds-on favourite, British Columbia, won comfortably. He went to the front at the start, and Royal Bengal was always second to him, but he was nearly three lengths away at the home turn, with Little Doubt' the same'distance away. British Columbia held on., to win, by two and a half lengths from Royal Bengal, with Little Doubt four lengths away, clear of.. .Arvada, wKb failed to handle the ground. ...... ■• : ■■i ;; : • A BIG SURPRISE. '. A hot- favourite in Beacon Fire was downed in-the Shorts Handicap,* the winner turning up. in the little-fancied La -Crown, who gave her supporters on the straight-out machine a return of nearly a score. Therel^ was a> delay :.at the post, and when they were.let go Haunui and Diagano dwelt. .La Crown jumped out smartly and soon had charge from Forceiul, Willowmere; Beaqon Fire, Lapstone, and Merry Way. Into the straight the order was Bs'Cro*n,;" Forceful,'Lapstone, Beacon Fire, and King* Peg inclose order. Beacon Fire.'.rail'up'to La Crown at the distance, and- ior—it~ moment looked like winning, but could not go on with it, and La Crown -defeated him by a length and a half. Amyril was a couple of lengths away third; clear of a bunch' comprising Instalment, Merry Way, Forceful, Diagano, and Haunni:" La Crown's win was very popular, despite the fact that" there was only £25 invested on her; Beacon Fire had every chance. 'There was a very keen finish, in the final event, the Borough Hack, in:which SlipTfery registered an impressive performance. He was last'at the five/furlongs, Tentcall, St. Clara. Miss. Cavendish,' Prince Reno, and Lallrf Qi^ex, comprising thV. leading division. Slippery, a' firfti favourite, moved up sharply at the^'1 half-mile,I' 'and at the koine turn, he was just behind St. Clara and Lalla QUeX, Prince'Reno, Chief Line, and Illuminate following the- favourite at this point. ...jSt. Clara was still.;,well clear at', the half-distance, when she began to weaken, and. Slippery arid',,Lalla: Quex joined issue with thp outsider, a splendid tussle ending,'iji favour of.»Sljpp'ery by half

a head over Lalla Quex, with St. Clara threerparts of a length away.. ' Prince Eeno, Tentcall, Illuminate, Chief Line, and.Miss Cavendish followed. This was Slippery's best.performance to date.
