OLD BOYS' FORWARDS
As an effective scoring •■ machine, ample evidence'-of which they hail given the previous' Saturday, Wellington were rendered helpless by Wellington College Old. Boy« at Ne^ytown Park. They failed .to score, Old Boys winning by nine points (three unconverted tries) to nil. The game was watched by- a good following of 200 or more spectators. Wellington: Cresswell; R. Ball, Diack, Pryde; Smith, Page; Kilby;. Dye, Carter, Bracken, McLean, Thornton, Rathgen, Fell, Jackson. " , Old Boys: Masters; Hollis, Dustin, Hill; Atkins, Baldwin; Sadler;, Bydder, T. Reynolds, J. La'mason, J. Reynolds, N. Gren•fell, Wright, McNeile, Williams. While there was no" lack of incident, the was not of an exhilarating or particularly attractive brand. , It was just a. hard-fought game, with a few bright' flashes by the backs'. Had the Wellington back division been allowed to operate doubtless the reverse would have been the position. That, however, did not suit Old Boys. Had they allowed Wellington that freedom necessary to bring1 their rearguard artillery into, action Old Boys more than likely would have gone down. Instead, so terrier-like were their forwards, in their persistency, that Old Boys severely cramped Wellington's style; morethan:that, they always impressed as masters of the situation. '. It was to their forwards, a virile young pack tuned vp 1 to a good pitch, that Old Boys. mainly owed their success.. • Those forwardsi never,, let up.. TJiis, backed up by solid tackling and effective smothering, had the result of crippling the Kilby-Page combination. Old Boys' forwards held the key. to the situation; they dominated the play" and the team had a good win. Sight must not-be lost of the fact, however, that through an injury to McLean Wellington played throughout the second spell with fourteen men. ' Old Boys, who-had faced the Run, changer] over for the sroond spell with six points up—tiiea by Atkins and Lamason. In the ' second spell Atkins scored. again", the game ending Old Boys 9, Wellington 0.--. The referee was Mr. J. Gilehrist.
