CHINAMAN ASSAULTED
TWO MEN FINED
An altercation between a Chinaman and two men on Saturday -night resulted in the appearance in the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., of Alfred Francis Christmas, a fireman, aged 34, and Charles Emms, a fireman, aged 35. Both men were charged with drunkenness and committing mischief by wilfully damaging fruit valued at £1, the' property of Peter Low Chong, while a further charge of assaulting Chong was preferred against Christmas, for whom Mr. J. D. Willis appeared. Pleas of guilty were entered to all charges. On the charges of drunkenness the accused wero convicted and discharged, on the charge of damaging fruit they were eaich fined £3, and on the charge of assault Christmas was fined £5. ■ Sub-Inspector Martin said that at about 9.20 p.m. on Saturday a constable found the Chinaman struggling on the floor of his shop with two men. A third man had apparently been in company with the two accused, but he had disappeared. The men, who had been drinking, had taken some fruit, and upon remonstrating with them tho Chinaman was assaulted. Fruit was scattered all over the floor of the shop. ~ The accused were ordered to niaki good the damage done. The default for payment of the fines was fixed at twenty-one days' imprisonment.
