LOWER HUTT BRANCH
The annual meeting of the Lower Hsitt branch of the Red Cross Society was presided' over by the Mayor, Mr. W. T. Strand. Among those present were Messrs. Abel, Galloway, and Grant, members o£ the Red Cross Society. A letter highly appreciative of the work done by the Lower llutfc branch was received from headquarters. The following odicers were elected: — .Patroness, Lady Roberts; president, Mr. J. Mitchell; secretary, Miss Gray; treasurer, Mrs. Burnley; auditor, Mr. M. J. Power; vice-presidents, Messrs. D. A. Ewen/V. Riddiford, W. Nash, L. T. Watkins, G. J. W. Cooper, H. G. Tagle, A. Meßaiu, I<\ Jenness, C. C. Odlin, H. P. Kidson, D. S. Patrick, J. W. Andrews, W. T. Strand, aud Revs. Father I)aly, 11. 13. K. Fry, J. McCaw, and J. E. Lopdell, "H. Sharpe. Ladies' committee, Mesdamos Wood, Bolton, Sooon, Burnley, Savage, Hefler, A. Y. Lees, A. H. Lees, Massey, Webb, Nimmo. Gillespie, M. J. Power. The financial statement showed that the branch's income for the year had been £216 11s. Annual subscriptions and donations amounted to £77 Is Bd. Of this amount £50 was given by the Bank of New Zealand, £5 by the Scales Shipping Company, £3 Is by St. James's Club, ami £1 2s Id by the High School, branch of the Red Cross; £77 13s lid was received as a half-share in the Red Cross ball, and £53 2s 7d from the sale of goods. The chief item of expenditure was for the purchase of material £19S 19s Od. The sums of £5 and £3 ISs were donated to tho Wairoa Earthquake Fund and the Olaki Health Camp respectively. Tho year, which commenced with a- balance of £S 12s lOd, closed with a balance of £2 0s Od. Tlie report for the year ended March 31, 1933, stated that the Lower Hutt branch had functioned' successfully in rendering very useful service to' the community. The society's grateful thanks were expressed to all those who had helped it by donations, services, or in any other way. The society was looking forward to having its funds replenished from the proceeds of the coming Red Cross ball, which it shared with the Mayor's Relief Committee. An important part of the society's work was the. keeping of a girls' .unemployment register. This was in charge of the secretary, Miss Gray, and through it a number of positions had been found for women and girls. Another free service rendered by the society was that in charge of Sister Lees, a Red Cross nurse from Wellington headquarters. During tlie past year she had given free advice and assistance in Lower Hutt, and she would continue to be at the rooms for that purpose every Wednesday afternoon throughout the winter. Li the past year thousands of garments had been issued to- those in need.
