FRENCH CIRCLE
A large and appreciative audience assembled at the Pioneer Club rooms recently to witness a performance of "Le Juif Polonais," a drama by the French dramatists, Erkmann-Chatrian. The play is better known to English people under the title of "The Bells," it having been adapted from the French by the late Sir Henry Irving. The outstanding performance of the evening was Dr. Carbery's interpretation of the role of Mathis. Madame Deehanet-Mclntosh played the part of Catherine with much charm, and the roles of Annette and Christian were charmingly played by Mrs. Finlayson and Mr. Norman Byrne respectively. Mr. F. Miles was impressive as "Le Juif Polonais," and later as the President of tho Court. Dr. Henning was excellent as "The Dreamer." He also read stage directions. Minor roles were played by Professor Boycl-Wilson, Miss Coralie Smythson, Mr. Balham, and Mr. James Butler.
The musical accompaniments were played by Mrs. Scott, and the singing of "La Marseillaise" concluded the evening. Miss Smythson received the guests. The next programme under the joint direction of Mrs. Scott and Miss Mead, will consist of musical items, a lecturette, and a comedy.
