Unusual features wero presented in the case "of Henry Broit, a dealer, of Cuba Street, who stood' his trial in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon and today on a charge of stealing a carpet, 'valued at ; £S the property of Mrs. Marion Mizabeth Black. After a twenty ininutcs' retirement, the jury returned a verdict ot not guilty,'and. Broit was discharged by Mr. Justice Blair. ■'. ■ • .] ,The ■ case . was not an ordinary, one or a person appropriating another's property. The accused, in the course of his business, J bought the enrpet from a man t perfectly honestly. Subsequently he was informed by detectives tlint the cai'pet had been stolen. It was alleged by the Crown thatthereafter Broit took' steps to retain ,tlie cavpet for himself and deprive the right-j t'ul owner of it. j The defence was that Broit at no tints, had formed the intention of theEt. Broit said ho had sold the carpet to a married woman living in a flat above his for £2 10s, and. that when the police wanted to see it he bought the carpet buck from the woman to whom lie had sold it ami provided facilities for the detectives to inspect it in his own flat. ilr.
