MEETINGS NEXT WEEK

JUBILEE OF INSTITUTE

Education Week has'become a regular feature of the month of May in Wellington, and next week teachers. from all parts of New Zealand will take the opportunity afforded by the term holidays to assemble in Wellington for their annual meetings. Chief among the organ-, isations which will meet is the New Zealand Educational Institute; the annual meetings of the Secondary Schools' Association, Technical Schools' Association, Women Teachers' Association, Headmasters' Association, and Assistant Masters'*. Association will also take place. Especial significance attaches to Educa* tion Week this year from the fact that the New. Zealand Educational Institute is celebrating its jubilee. Founded in 1883 by a meeting of representatives of th» various teachers' associations that existed at. that time in various parts of. the country, the institute has, experienced a steady growth in numbers and influence, and has taken a leading part in advocating educational progress in the Dominion. 'Such an anniversary as the jubilee calls for special commemoration, and arrange-' merits have been, made to celebrate the occasion in a fitting mariner. At midday on Monday a civic reception will be ten-dered-Jto the visiting representatives and past presidents in the Concert Chamber of'the Town Hall. In the afternoon the visitors will be taken for a motor drive and entertained fit afternoon tea, and in the evening a dinner will be tendemf to the founders and past-presidents of the institute. The business session of the institute vriit open on Tuesday morning. At this the institute will pay honour to the memory of those of its members who lost their lives in the war.. The loss of teachers was particularly heavy, and it is intended to commemorate their sacrifice fly reading the roll of honour of primary school teachers, after which the president wiil lay a wreath on the War Memorial. Ordinary business of the institute will be interrupted on Tuesday evening by a jubilc™ party at the Mayfitir Cabaret. A supper party at the cabaret will be held at the conclusion of Thursday .night's meeting, and the jubilee meeting will conclude with an afternoon tea tendered as a farewell to the retiring secretary, Mr. H. A. Parkinson, who is vacating office alter a service of twenty-two years.
