YEAR'S GRADUATES

CAPPING CEREMONY

VICTORIA COLLEGE

The Victoria University College graduation ceremony, which took place in the Town Hall last evening, was much briefer than usual, owing to the inability of the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) to attend. Mr. llislop was to have been the speaker, but he was called away to Palmerston North during tho clay, and it was not found possible to obtain a substitute. Apart from a few remarks by the chairman of the Victoria College Council (Mr. P. Levi), who presided, the ceremony was confined to the conferring of tho degrees and a few college songs. In characteristic fashion, the students received Mr. Levi's announcement of Mr. Hislop's inability to attend with loud . applause and cheers, which were renewed with enthusiasm when it was stated that no substitute was available. Mr. Lcvi said trie fact that they had a long list of graduates showed that the college was still doing good work. The closing of the teachers' training college—(cheers from tho students) —had deprived the college of a number of students, but in spite of that they were managing to struggle along. Another important event had been the opening of Weir House. (Cheers.) A voice: Can't wo get any eggs for breakfast. Another voice: Toast would be an improvement. Mr. Lcvi said ho was sure Weir House would prove an important addition to the corporate life of the college. Mr. Levi then conferred tho degrees.
