The Nazis simultaneously assumed control of trade unions throughout Germany, inaugurating Herr Hitler's campaign to break social democracy's hold on the workers and mould them to his will. Communist journals must submit to ! Government control, and the distribution of provocative leaflets is banned. Hitler's blow at Socialist trade unions with a membership of over five millions was executed with ruthless efficiency. Police and Brown Shirts occupied all trade union buildings, workmen's banks, and cooperative stores, and arrested fifty leaders, including the secretary of the Trade Union Federation, Herr Leipert, the ex-Labour Minister, Herr Wissel, and three editors.
