CITY WORK BY CONTRACT
Speaking at Aro Street last, night, i Mr. T. Brindle i (Labour) said that the principle of allowing city work to be done by private tender was one that should not be ""countenanced by the electors, because it only meant hand-, ing out profits to private concerns. In most cases the work could be done better and cheaper by the employees of the council. By the City Council deciding to undertako the building of tho Hutt Road it made a net saving to the city of £19,349 12s Id. The Harbour Board decided to construct in concrete tho Pipitea Wharf, and tho work was carried out at ,a net saving of £37,461 against tho lowest tendon
