RACING AT HAWERA

STEEPLECHASING SEASON

HORSES IN GOOD FORM

Useful fields have been accepted for the first day of the Egmont Racing Club's "Winter Meeting at Hawera tomorrow, and if the weather is satisfactory the club should experience a successful meeting. This fixture is customarily looked up6n as opening the steeplechase season proper in the North Island, and very often the winners of the more important jutiipiOg events ahead are seen out in action there. Only last year, for example, the winner and runner-up of the " G.N. Steeple* (Copey and Callamart) and the second horse in the G.N. Hurdles (Make Up) filled the places in the Egmont Steeples. After recent rain the. track is almost pertain to be on the soft side. The programma and prospectp arc:~ " 11.15; TONGAHOE HURDLES, of 100 sots; IVs miles. Callamart .^ 10 10 Ganpat .... !> 5 .High Falutin' 10 5 Invictus .... ,fl 2 Consent 10 3 Sir Keel . fl 0 "Chief Link .. 9 11 Callamart, returning to the small fences, jnay prove hard indeed to dispose of ■in the Tongahoe Hurdles, for he is already yell seasoned and he appears able to go ilong with his fields now much better than he formerly did. Early last Beaton he was the Grand National Hurdles fanner, so he is not badly off oh 10.10. jnvictus and Ganpat have recent winning form, and High Falutin' should be lm- ' jproved after his promising Marton debut. A formidable pair read to be Callamart and Invictus. J2.30: TELEGBAPH HACK HANDICAP, Of SO sots ; 6 furlongs, Ceresl 9 3 Icier T 9 Merry Way ..9 0 Diversion ... 7 1 Slippery ... 8 S Prince Beno .70 JLapttont ... 8 S Grey P»pa .. T • U Cram ... 7 3 > The public will probably confine their Attention to the top half of the handicap in the Telegraph Hack Handicap. Ceresl, the topweight, has only to begin at all decently to be hard, and his principal opposition may be prox'ided by the double Stratford winner, Merry Way. Lapstoneand La Crown should also pei> form well. Slippery, who haa lots of spiled, has lately not been tunning on too well, but racing should have improved him. The favourites . may ,bs Cereal, Merry Way, and Lapstone. Hard Gold ... 9 7 Following his fine showing against Callamart at Marton last week Okopua is; likely to be a good favourite in the Egmont. Steeplechase. He is a first-class jumper, and has excellent sticking ability, with the necessary turn of.pace. Copey, Jayson, and Fine Acre may be the ones to make, .it ar race for him. Copey is ■well seasoned -and should be showing improvement from now on. There will be backings for Okopua and Copey. 2.0: FLYING HANDICAP, of 100 sots; ; 6 furlongs. lady Quex ..9 0 Arvada 7 8 All Humbue • 8 2 The Tiger .... 7 6 Awtktn 8 2 Little Doubt . 7 5 Royal Bengal . 8 1 Green linnet ■. •7, 3 £rltUb Monaiof .7 0 , s Columbia 713 St*trW horses will carry good support §n the Flying Handicap, but the main fane*** will probably be All Humbug and thft «l*tt of the Johnson stable, Royal B«ms| or Arvada. These three' horses all I»Te good recent winning form.' The northerner, British Columbia, has speed an 4 «ay be an upsetting element. Lady Qmc went good races at Ellerslie recently, but does not act well in soft goiafc . Green Linnet, it may be noted, is im at a much handier weight than aha hat recently had. Good efforts should be coming from All Humbug and Royal Bengal (or Arvada). t 45: BACK SCURRY, of 75 soys; 5 furlongs. Beacon Fire .. 9 5 WllJowmero . Beacon Fire, rtapp*-*ring afcei* a spell, ,goes well fresh, and Merry Way, if not incurring a reha«idjc<ip, woilld be among the maiu selections. Misa Cavendish, King Peg, and La Ctown look likeliest of the others. Well served at the start, a trio with good prospects appear to be Instalment, Miss Cavendish, and Merry Way. 3.50: McKAE HANDICAP, of 120 soys; IVi miles. SMtown ... 8 13 Gibraltar .... 7 8 Asa Kban ... 713 Alloy 7 5 Cvrfcx .... 7 10 March Alone . 7 0 < Khan and Carfex are likely to joKse attention in the Mcßae Hanif produced, but a soft track may >. Ifirmer among the missing. Car--3 well on any* going and is in shape. Seatown would be oting on an easy track, in spite ■X'k of punch at Ellerslie. Alloy the best' of the others, thougn / be well not to overlook that .' was well backed and went good c Hawera in February. The main ; look 3 likely for Carfex and Aga (or Alloy). -113: iWMITI SACK HANDICAP, of 90 soys; 7 furlongs, Fairway 9 X .Match Aloao . 8 0 King Win ... 9 • Glowllsht ... 7 9 AttSttJY. .. • « i»"» «vex -II Dtrtstock ... S * Pango ....... 7 3 ' Illuminate ... 1 3 St. Clara ... 7 0 "If Fairway is on hand he will take lots of beating in the Tawhiti Hack Handicap, for he was a class above a similar field at Marton. He,is a big Catmint gelding who likes it soft and should not b*' worried with his additional weight. Beeconsfield and King Win should provi<i« solid opposition, as both are fit and iartcoving. Davistock, Attentive, Glowludit, and TentcaU will all have friends. tW final hoist may include the numbers vi fairway, Beaconsfield, and King Win.
