MOTORISTS' AFFAIRS

Tljg following items of interest to motorists arose at last night'a meeting of the executive of the Wollincton Auto, mobile Club:— "I hop« that thoM council candidate* who *n tdvocatin* «b <ltern»tive route from Wellinaton will live up to their expr«Mions 3 elected," wid the chair; man (Mr. B. A. Bttt). It was pointed out by Mr. Batt that the credit for th« gucse»tion for the alternative route wa« due to the executive «£ the club, which had originated the idea twelve month* The City Council hab been asked to remove the prohibition of ea>.t-bound traffic in the new street connecting Lambton Quay and Bowen Street at the W« Memorial corner. • The pre»ent bylaw requiring ea»t-bound trafhc to enter Lambtoa Quay via Bowen Street, it wa* itated, was the cause of congestion ana danger at the junction. In the report of the road* committee it /waa atated that it wai evident the main obstacle to the conduction of a etock route ' between Johnsouville and the abattoir* waa one of finance. Considering the circumstance*, it wa* unfortunate that the construction of a track should be further delayed. At least during the winter month* the bitumen in the gorge wa* practically always wet and slippery when cattle were being driven over it, and damage and injury to the beasts alone warranted action without taking into consideration the danger to road traffic, . Steps are to be taken to induce the authorities to erect a hand-rail on the sidewalks on the Hutt Pipe Bridge to keep pedestrians off the traffic portioa of the biidge. The Railway Department has been HBkrd to cut down or trim the shrub* growing npiir the Porirua railway crossing. At the present time these shrub* obstruct the visibility of trains in the cane of traffic travelling south. Twenty new members of the club were elected during April. There were three resignations during the period. The health authorities are to be interviewed with the object of getting something done to overcome the nuie>nnce of tho Johneonville septic tank drain. _ It wa*'decided to enter into a. reciprocal affiliation arrangement with tho Auto<, mobile Association of Malay.
