I>r, L. G. Austin (Combined) was born in Lyttelton in 1888. He was educated .at Christchnrcli Boys' High School to follow Law, but went into tho teaching profession. After leaving the Chrlsteburch Training College he was headmaster at Jjoburn, and then first assistant at various schools in Canterbury and Huwko'a Bay. He qualified in medicine at Otago University in 1983, and has been on the staf of the Chrlstchurch Hospital, Cashmere Hills sanatorium, Bay of Islands hospital, and Timaru public hospital. On three occasions be made extensive study journeys to England, America, and the Continent of Europe, and . investigated hospital methods and management. He acted as chairman of the special Auxiliary Social Welfare Committee in tho Hutt Valley. She has been an activ* member of the, women'a branch of the Labour Party, and has had a wide experience on distress committees. She has rendered service to the relief workers in Miramar. Mrs. Dean is a staunch supporter of the Labour movement. Mrs. J. Fraser (Labour) has been a member of the Hospital Board for eight years. She was among the first women Justices of tha Peace appointed in New Zealand, and she has acted aa Associate on the Children's Court for about six years. She is an official visitoi to the Porirua Mental Hospital, and is a, member of-the Eugenics, Board. Mrs.' Fraser is interested in other social service 'activities, and has been- actively associated with the Labour movement for twenty years; is the wife of P. Furkcrt (Combined) served for 39 years in the Publlo Works Department, rising to head of the Department, and serving as engineer-in-' chief 'and undersecretary for ' twelve years, also marine engineer. He was tbe first chairman of the Mais Highways Board, and held the position for eight years, till he retired. Mr. Helliwell was a member of the old Melrose Borough Council, and was one of the founders ef the present Competitions Society and its first president. (Combined), has been Justice of the Peace for 20 years, • member of the Wellington Licensing Bench for 82 years, of the Hospital Board for 20 ycare, chairman of the Social Welfare Committee for 19 yean, trustee for the Home for the Aged Needy for 18 years, and chairman of the Trust for tho past 11 years. •\•e • * * Mrs. J. K. Preston (Combined) has been a member of the Wellington Hoeflttl Board for 6 years, all of^hieh have been spent on the Social Welfare Conmittee.
