SCENT-BALLS

Using sweet smelling herbs and1 perfumes is a very old custom indeed. | Medieval ladies used to carry "pomanders" about on their girdles to protect themselves from any unpleasant smell. They were made of finely wronght gold or silver, perforated, to let out the sweet scent of the lavender, etc., with which they were filled, and exquisitely ornamented with fine, artis-1 tic workmanship. Oranges sometimes were used, with the inside removed and a mixture of sweet smelling herbs substituted. They are very easy to copy, if you fill them with lavender, dried rose-petals, and i orris root, and cover the- outside with cloves. "CORDELIA" (16). Christchurch.
