SHOOTING OF GODWITS
MINISTER'S STATEMENT
The New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society recently wrote'to the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. A. Young), stating that it was regretted.that the continued destruction of godwits was permitted .in many districts. Owing to game birds becoming fewer in numbers each succeeding year, and the number of hunters increasing, shooting, illegal and legal, became concentrated on a few species, and extermination must result. Ducks were an example of rapid decrease, and godwits would follow. t The request was made that greater restrictions should be imposed.
The Hon. J. A. Young replied that the matter was'the subject of much consideration before the game season notifications were issued, and while it was decided not to adopt the suggestion to place godwits on the absolutely protected list, shooting seasons were declared only in the following acclimatisation districts:—Auckland, Bay of Islands, Hobson, MangonuiWhangaroa, Nelson, North Canterbury, Otago, Rotorua, Southland, ami Taurariga. The season was confined from February 1 to March 31, 1934, and the bag limit was twenty a day.
