BUTTER SITUATION
IMPORTERS TO ACT
PETITION TO RESTRICT FOREIGN
The New Zealand .Dairy-, Producers' Export Association met in Wellington today! to consider a cablegram, dated London, April 5, received from the New Zealand Dairy Produce Importers' .Association, and reading as follows:—
Importers are very' concerned' regard'ln'g the present disastrous state of the better market and future prospects, as if; we are to receive the same quantity of foreign butter as last year we fail to se"e how total supplies can be absorbed except at prices lower than those ruling. .While opinions of importers differ regarding policy proposed restrictions of Dominion butter, the good faith on either side has never been doubted, and vrp are unanimous in stating that any opinions expressed have noi been-actu-ated by personal interests. JAt a joint meeting of New Zealand and Australian Associations held today a deputation was appointed to interview Minister Agriculture to petition for restriction of foreign supplies. It was resolved to publish the above Cabled message from London. During a discussion of the dispatch the members of the Exporters' Association expressed their satisfaction that the message entirely contradicted the statements of the acting-chairman and secretary of the board, to the effect that, some importers were acting from the point of view of "self interest" rather than in the interests of the industry.
The meeting agreed that the issues at stake are so vital and important to the New Zealand dairy industry in particular and those of the Dominion in general that, any further" 'suggestions of sectional interest were to be deprecated.
