CORRESPONDENCE
USEFUL CITY WORK
the Editor.) Sir, —It were better for the civic progress if more like "New Eoad" were to come forward with similar suggestions for the improvement of Wellington in general and the unemployed in particular. I would like to suggest that the city fathers should, persevere with the access problem of the western suburbs by doing something towards putting in the approaches for a tunnel from the foot of Mt. Pleasant Road through the hill to meet the narrow road which goes from the Karori tunnel up the gully to ,the Karbri reservoir. The grade of the tunnel should not.be excessive, and the council could start by filling-in the gully first to widen the-road. This; would be. a step towards the necessary western approach of the tunnel, and nothing, to buy. The_ tunnel portal could be started and the debris used to fill the gully. This route is quicker and will haye fewer stops between the terminals of the ear route. It will provide Highbury <md Mt. Pleasant . with better tram facilities, and be of permanent value to the city.— I am, etc., WESTERN ACCESS.
