TRAFFIC BREAKDOWN
FLOOD AT TAUMARUNUI
A" violent downpour of rain,'apparently affecting a wide area in the midland portion of . the North Island, has caused serious flooding, and has resulted in what is described as. the worst traffic dislocation in the history "of the Main Trunk railway. A report from Taumarunui describes the invasion of streets and houses by the waters of the swollen Wanganui River, so sudden that rescuers awakened some people who were unaware that their homes were already flooded. .
Washouts and slips are widespread, and have caused a complete interruption of the railway: services between Qngarue and Ohakune. The south-bound Limited was derailed near Okahukura, the junction of the Stratford line, which is also affected in its eastern portion.
At the Chateau .Tongariro, the rain-storm was in the nature of a cloud-burst, and access to the main road was cut off through the destruction of a,bridge.
