BETTER WEATHER

DEPRESSION DEPARTS

Adapting to the present meteorological situation an expression frequently used in these days, it may be said that the corner has been turned and better' times are ahead. The vigorous depression which yesterday played havoc with the all-important cricket fixture has fortunately proved to be a fast-moving one, for it has departed and better weather is forecast. Winds in eastern districts will be north-westerly at times, but elsewhere moderate to strong westerly to southerly winds may be expected, southerlies later on becoming more general. Changeable weather is indicated, with intermittent rain in most districts, more especially in those with a westerly aspect. There should, however, be a gradual improvement. Temperatures will be cool. •

When the depression crossed the Dominion yesterday, barometers fell to an extremely low level in parts of the South Island , during the afternoon. Strong northerly winds prevailed and reached gale .force in places. The weather generally was very unsettled, and the rain was almost general. Some very heavy falls were recorded last night, over six inches of rain being registered in parts of the Gisborne area. The result has.been flooded rivers and slips. With the passing of the trough of the depression, winds changed to the south-west in most parts of the Dominion, and by 9 a.m. today a distiDct improvement was . in evidence, scattered showers being then, confined chiefly to districts with a westerly aspect. ■ ■

Auckland experienced dull -aifd unsettled weather yesterday with occasional showers. The wind was a fresh one from the north.

Wellington's weather yesterday'was of a distinctly - unpleasant type. A strong northerly wind prevailed all day and heavy rain fell at intervals. The fall recorded at Kelburn totalled 49 points; but the rain iii the- Hutt Valley was much heavier, 113 points falling in Lower Hutt. The wind changed to the south-west at 5.20 a.m. today, but at 9 a.m. it was north-westerly again, the weather being beautifully fine. Christchurch; experienced a very hot day, although mostly cloudy. A fresh north-westerly wind prevailed. A brief south-westerly came up after midnight but no rain fell, and the weather there this morning was fine and sunny. After a fine morning in Dune'din yesterday, a fresh south-westerly wind sprang up, and during the night there was some heavy rain.
