AGA KHAN VERY FIT

JOTTINGS FROM HAWERA

(Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, March 20.

Five horates leave here tomorrow for the Manawatu Meeting, and with the Hawera horses' from Trentham will make a strong representation from this centre.- . Calamine, Aga Khan, Icier, Eichfield, and Haunui will be the fre6h horses. Calamine shaped poorly at Opunake in the Highweight Handicap, but will be better suited back in hurdling contests. Icier is a promising three-year-old maiden by Nigger Minstrel from Ici,' the dam of that good performer, Mendip. She haa been working well, and looks1 like performing creditably. She is owned by the veteran Hawera sportsman, Mr. H. Spratt. Richfield, who succeeded in winning the Opunake Cup, will be all the better for his race, and although there was nothing impressive about his win, he may show considerable improvement. •He is no stranger to" Awapuni, and runs well on the big course.

Haunui, a big, good-looking Weathervane gelding, is* to make his initial appearance on the second day. He is from the Birkenhead mare Elaine, and is four years old.' In his track essays he has shown promise of turning out well.

Chief Line and Awaken returned home from Trentham today, so the former will not be racing at Awapuni, where he figures among the acceptors. . .

Aga Khan has been doing splendid work, and his gallop during the weekend was* of a very encouraging nature. He will be well supported in the main handicap locally. G. Duncan is mentioned as his rider. ■ . • .

The Stratford secretary (Mr. W. Power) was at Opunake, and was assured of plenty of support for; his club's meeting on April 1.

Gibraltar pulled up very sore after running last all the way in'the Opunake Cup, and his trip to Awapuni to contest the, Awapuni Cup has been abandoned.

Calamine, ridden by W. Grindlay, schooled over a round of the hurdles this morning, jumping well. The mare vill be ridden by Grindlay on Wednesday.

Carfex'was galloped on -t Opunake, but not seriously, and the injury will not interfere with his preparing for Stratford. .
