THE AUTUMN MEETING

FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

PAYOI7EABLE WEATHEE

Ideal weather favoured tho opening of. the • Wellington Racing Club's Autumn fleeting at Trcntham today. A brilliantly fine late summer day, pleasantly tempered by a light breeze, assisted in attracting a most satisfactory ~ attendance, and everything pointed early to the club's enjoying a most successful first day to its meeting. The recent long fine spell had made the track very fast, but it was not as. hard on tcp as tracks have been at most meetings lately. For the past week the course lias been well watered from the . clubs own wells, and tho jar at least . was out of tho ground. There }\!as an ample sale of grass to stand up to all tests to which it might be put during the meeting. The club used the win-and-plaec system of dividend distribution again, and the arrangements, which are the same as at the January meeting, worked smoothly from the start. The new style has taken on so well with tho "Wellington public that it is at present hardly possible even to envisage Trentham reverting to tho former mode. Results and running of the races up .to time of going to press were as fol- - lows:— ' RIMU HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of 160 soys; second horse 30 and third 15 soys from the stake; li miles. { - 4—s—G. Logan's b-g Locksley,1 by Arrowsmith—Carette, 'yyrs, 10.9 (W. Hogan) 1 7—7—Mrs. W. A. Fuller's b m : . Revision, by Surveyor—Consultation,' aged, 0.10 - (U. Thomson) 2 ■■' s—4—F. W. Davis's eh g Eed Flush, t>y digger Minstrel—Red _'~ Helen, 4yrs, 9.0 (F. Anderson) 3 Also started: 3-31 Gay Court 11.2 (A. Jenkins), 1-1 Chief Line 10.3 (A. E. : .Ellis), 8-8 Adventus 9.13 (M. Nieol), 2-2 Palace 9.10 (P. Mcßrearty), 6-6 - Owlsflight 9.3 (D. O'Connell). .A good race was provided in the Rimu Highweight Handicap, tho first five horses finishing in a bunch. It was ■ a bad start for the public, however, as, the three best fancied horses were unt placed.. Palace set out to make tho • running, and along the back he was closely attended by Eevision, Eed Flush (on rail), Owlsflight, and-Ad-ventus, with Gay Court and Locksley bringing up the rear. Palace was still in charge at / the straight entrance, with Eevision right up, then Eed FlusTi, Chief Line, with Gay Court coming on the inside, and Locksley on the outer. Palace tired below the false - rail, leaving Eevision just in front of Chief Line and Gay Court. An exciting finish developed, Locksley's run getting him up on the post to gain the victory by half a head over Eevision, who beat Bed Flush (who came again near the .. end) by a neck. Gay Court was inches ■. away next, and so was Chief Line. After a gap were Palace and Adventus. Time, . 2min 7Jsec. (Winner trained by owner.) TRIAL PLATE, of. 160 soys; second horse 30 soys and third 15 sdv3 from the stake; weight 8.0; seven furlongs. . I—l—B. Hammond's b m Bonnie Vale, by Lackham-—Dale Ogden, 4yrs (J. M. Broughton), 5-6 Granado (A. Didhain), 12-12 Love . Court (S. Wilson), 4-4 Miss Hushabve (E. Eeed). " Bonnie Vale was made a good win favourite for the. Trial Plate, but her supporters had anxious moments prior to the judge's hoist being signalled, ■when they were relieved to find that she had been dead-heated with Eupator. Heather Glow was quickest to begin, and when; they had settled down Bonnie Vale and. Eupator had run up to be next behind her, with Miss Hushabye, i Silver Sight, Takiri, and Royal Dash next. ' Heather Glow was still in . charge as they swung for home, but Eupator quickly settled this opponent. , Bonnie Vale challenged determinedly, the pair racing neck and neck for half a furlong, and the favourite, after appearing to weaken chains off the post, made a supreme effort at the end to split honours. Shining Gold finished fast a good leifgth back to deprive Royal Dash by inches of third money. Heather Glow was fifth, and next came '- Silver Sight, AVhctu-ma, and Miss. . Hushabye, with Takiri last., Time, _ Imin 26isec. - . (Winners trained by E. Penman, Otaki, and J. Lindsay, Eiecarton.) " NEW ZEALAND. ST. La Moderne was backed as unbeatt able for the St. Leger Stakes, and after ,: - holding a good position all' tho wav came along the outer in the straight to win very decisively. La • Moderne was early in front, but at tho end of . half a mile Eebcl Song and Golden , ■ Horn had gone up to the lead, and they made the rest of tho running to the straight from Clangor, Inflation, and Tout le Mond (in line), La Moderne and Eocket (together), Chile and Gold Trail (together) and Importance and Cardinal Moon. Once turned for homo, Golden Horn began to weaken, and La Moderne and Gold Trail issued challenges along the outside. Gold Trail on the remote outside, forging ahead squeezed La Moderne out of an ( opening near the distance, but the favourite ' luckily got out of tho trap and finished too strongly for Gold Trail, whom she finally comfortably beat by threequarters of a- length. Eebel Sohg was a like distance away, with Eocket two lengths off. Then came Clangor and Inflation, with a gap to Golden Horn, Chile, Tout le Mond, Importance, and Cardinal Moon.
