SALE OF RAILWAYS
A GISBORNE REQUEST,
It is reported from Gisborne thati the Cook County Council has decided: to urge the Prime Minister to consult the local bodies of the district before; any sale or lease of the Gisborne-i Napier railway is finalised so that the interests of the district will be protected. •
Mr. F. S. Bowon said at the meeting of the County Council that an expenditure of £70,000 .would complete tha line as far as Wairoa and Waikokopu,: and if the railway were handed o-ver to' private enterprise it might endanger; the completion of the Gisborne end fit view of the possibility of the Government saying it could not complete that section of the line until the lease of. the other section had expired.
