CONGREGATIONAL UNION

After Having been in progress at Auckland for eight days, the annual assembly of the Congregational ■ Union of New Zealand closed on Wednesday. There was a lengthy discussion on the following motion: "That this assembly feels the necessity for a -united Christian opinion upon war as . futile, and would stress the Christian ideal of non-resistance and selfgiving as the only way to unity." Members agreed on the futility of -war, but there was no unanimity of opinion concerning the best means of combating it, and the motion was ■withdrawn.

The following officers were elected:— Moderator and secretary, the Bey. Harry Johnson; treasurer, Mr. T. Forsyth'(Wellington); registrar, Mr. R. A. Stewart (Wellington)'; auditor, Mr. Harold Miller; chairman of college council, Mr. H. Ennor; editor of the magazine, the Rev. A. Mead (Diraedin). The Rev. George Heigh Way, o£ Auckland, was elected chairman-elect for 1934, and the Rev. A. Whiting was appointed director of youth work.

The Timaru church extended an invitation to the union to hold the 1934 assembly at that centre, subject to the approval of the Canterbury district committee.
