BOY UNEMPLOYMENT
WOKK OF COMMITTEE
PLACING BOYS ON FARMS
The "Wellington Boy Unemployment Executive Committee has recommenced its activities. During the past year over six hundred town and country positions have been found for Wellington unemployed boys.
Unfortunately, the position with regard to juvenile unemployment is still very acute, states the secretary, Mr. Li. J. Greenberg, and the committee would appreciate the co-operation oi" employers in the city and in the country in finding positions for boys. In addition to a largo number of registrations left over from th© previous year, of boys who have not yet obtained employment—some of the boya have returned to school—there are already two hundred and seventy additional registrations up to March 14 of this year. The V.M.C.A. is continuing to make available the best of its resource in meeting the needs of these unemployed boys.
A -continuous service for the interviewing of boyg anil the placing of them on farms is being voluntarily carried out by Messrs. A. Gibbs, ,t. "W. M. Smith, W. A. Marshall, and- S. T. S. Martin. On the city side of the work a representative of the Labour Department is working in association with the V.M.C.A. staff. A number of boys who passed through the recent Penrose Agricultural Training Camp are still waiting to be placed. Farmers requiring the services of boys are asked to .communicate with the secretary of the Wellington V.M.C.A. immediately. All that the committee insists upon is that boys placed on farms should be provided with, wholesome living conditions, an opportunity to learn, and a weekly amount for pocket money. It is felt that most of the boys offering for farm work will give satisfaction provided the farmers who engage their services will give them an opportunity of becoming accustomed to the work. There "are excellent boys offering far employment in the city, and the boy unemployment office (telephone number 54-821) will be pleased to make available the services of boys either for permanent of temporary employment.
