DISPERSED

NO DEPUTATION

As had been stated would be the case, the attempt of a deputation of relief workers to interview the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. A. Hamilton) yesterday afternoon was not sue.cessful. The.members of the deputation were met by the police, under Inspector J. -Lander, and were kept outside the gates of the Parliamentary grounds. The hour set for the accompanying demonstration of relief workers was 4 p.m., and within a quarter of an hour of that time about 500 v relief workers had gathered outside the gates. Only a few police were on duty at the gates at 4 o'clock, but a crowd of about 150.0 people assembled eventually, and the police guard was strengthened, three mounted men making their appearance.

The first speaker for the relief workers was ordered down from a position at the top of a pillar by the police, and, refusing to comply, was pulled down to the accompaniment of remonstrances from the crowd. Other speakers, however, were allowed to make brief addresses, after which the crowd was quietly dispersed. •
