THE SECRETARY'S TOUR

Last week, at. the Church Army Headquarters, London, a luncheon was held at which a welcome was given to Captain. Davey, secretary of the Church Army overseas evangelistic work, who has just returned after visiting Australia, New Zealand, and ludia. Captain Davey, who was the pioneer of the Church Army work in Canada and America, said ho had travelled some 50,000 miles. Ho.had stayed with some seventeen archbishops and bishops. Without exception they spoke most warmly -of their chief and the board and the staff, and had the warmest feelings of gratitude for what had been done. They expressed the hope that in the dioceses they ruled over Church Army work might bo extended. Speaking of Australia, Captain Davey said there were conditions prevailing in the- Bush districts where people had only four church services a year, and one parish priest had twenty-eight State schools, to deal with. For the first time in one church a Sunday evening service was held when he was there, and one hundred and forty people were present. "That is why there should bo in Australia,", the speaker added, "like other places an Australian Church Army where young laymen may bo trained and linked up with a parish priest.'' Their work had won golden opinions th&rc. Referring to New Zealand, Captain Davey said that of all the cities he had entered Auckland seemed to him to bo the most lovely.
