TOBACCO GROWING
(To the Editor.) - Sir, —In '-The Post" on Saturday there appeared some interesting information on "Tobacco Culture" in Dunedin, and stating this was probably the first occasion on which the cultivation of tobacco had been attempted in Otago. May. I be permitted to state that about forty-five years ago tobacco was grown oh the Taieri Plains near Mosgiel. I remember as a lad one of the settlers there on several occasions presenting my father -with a large roll of smoking tobacco about two feet long and about two inches thick. It was rolled in canvas, and had been bound tightly with marline, in .the same manner as once prevailed in the Navy. He also gave my father a tobacco plant, which grew rapidly in the garden patch, so that the cultivation of this plant is by no means new in Otago.—l am, etc., J; A. MACDONALD.
