SUPT./EGCLES RETIRING

(By Telegraph.—Press: Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. After thirty-eight years' continuous service .with the New Zealand: Police Force, Superintendent W. Eccles, who has been in charge.of Dunedin district since June 1, 1931, will retire on superannuation on July 15. ' > Superintendent ' Eccles joinpd the Force on January 16, 1896, in Wellington, doing, duty there until 1897, when he went to Auckland as a: mounted constable. Later he went to Te Puke and "Whakatane, and in 1906 he returned to Auckland, being stationed at Devonport, He was promoted; in 1909 to sergeant's rank and was transferred to Dunjadin. Afterwards he served on thq Otago goldfields, and at Waimate and To Kuiti. In 1919 ho was promoted to senior sergeant at Invereargill, and he camo to Dunedin in 1922 as sub-inspector. Two years later he was made inspector in charge of the West Coast district, and subsequently at Gisborno and Hamilton. He remained at Hamilton until 1931, when he was transferred to Dunedin as superintendent. Superintendent Ecclos, who will bb s'ueeeeded in Dunedin by Inspector Mcllvenoy, of Wanganuij in.tends, to settle in Auckland.
