BUT INFERIOR HORSES!
(From. '•Vedette.") !: ;!;/,.- SCTNEY, February 9. j The Australian .visitors to New Zealand for the . yearling sales and the Wellington' Cup' Meeting, several of iwhom were making their first acquain-. tarice with the "Dominion, returned in ; the .'main' very favourably impressed. The Trentham, course received nothing but eulogy, and .the conduct of .the meeting was extolled. ; It was agreed that .it. was the equal,, as a racecourse, of in Australia. : ;.: .: Naturally the monopoly of betting accorded ( the -totalisator did not appeal so much. Mr. J. S. Brunton, owner of Carry On and Maltdale, said on his roturn this week that he was: convinced that a combination of bookmakers and totalisator was more advantageous. Generally disappointment was expressed at the <»ihbre' of the horses seen out. One visitor, said that he considered the class at Trentham much below the standard that must Uiavi obtained in some previous years. His estimate would be approximately 141b. Even tho two-year-olds did not make any appeal and. he labelled thorn a moderate lot. , Looking through tho autumn handicaps issued to dato, ono could be quite sure that tho handicappers were not among tho party who visited Now' Zealand. These sgentleman are certainly not being influenced, by tho reports bl ought back and circulated.
