NAPIER PARK RACES

BRAMBLETORN^ HANDICAP

SPRINT TO SOUCHONG

(By .Telegraph.') (Special to "The Evenina Post.") NAPIER, This Day. The win-and-place system, of betting had another trial at the Napier Park Eacing Club's! Carnival Meeting on Saturday, and it proved in every way successful. The meeting was a special fixture, but the aggregate turnover of £8229 10s was a substantial increase on the sums ■ put through" at meetings since the earthquake. On the Saturday of tbe club's last Autumn Meeting, for example, only £6384 was handled, and at the Spring Meeting last October the investments totalled £5637. The weather was perfect, and the track waa 4 'in splendid order. It is expecteel that the meeting will yield a good profit. The,- last'race was run very much behind scheduled time. ' ; FAVOURITE OPENS. Wincess Bell was backed down "to favourite on the' win machine, and she dulyscored narrowly by a head after assisting in imaking her own running throughout. She and Admatha drew clear after going a furlong,-arid,the..-pair..fought- out the finish', the favourite just.'squee.ing home. Foiir lehgths • -'away: ; April Fool and Lavinia had-a similar fight for the other placing, the former succeeding by a head. Lkvihia was" somewhat unexpectedly a better favourite 'on-' the! place'- machine ■ than.the;winner. : ANOTHER FAVOURITE. Favourite on both machines,' Hybiscus •toon the Trial Handicap decisively. Royal Dash was first away, but Hybiscus was soon with her. The favourite, drew slightly, "away on, the "turn, and in the run home he held' his place to score comfortably by a_ length and a half from Royal Dash. '■■ Three lengths away was - High Grader; with Bradman and Tareha next. Marais was pulled up. The winner is a three-year-old half-brother by Hymestra to. Lotus Lily, and he also carries Mr. J. M. Cameron's colours. He has had four starts to date for the win, a, second, and a third. BRAMBLETORN EASILY. . '.Brambletorn confirmed the good' impression; recently formed about him to score in convincing style in the Carnival Handicap. .- After -the, field" had fairly got on its way. he moved up- behind the - pacemakihg Tahoina, White Fang, .Grand Lahu, and Shrewd being next.- Once on the home; stretch ,he had - the leader . .uickly settled, ;and he. came on to win by a' length and a "half from White Fang. Shrewd ' was ; three lengths'back third, followed by'-My Own. ■ It';.wasVthe:winner's fourth win in his .last. five", starts,,,, and in . ordinary . class . he V'mayl.not': be. at the,, end of his.' run yet.,- :Se-i.,::,i_ipr.oving:all,the time; andperhaps-, later-, on yhe will be: playing 7a. ; pi'Omineht .part in .'important"-' events, ..'as ~there. can"he:;'no''doubt about-hi... staying ability.'.: He was. the third favourite to win-in three race's. ' SLIPPERY NARROWLY. :' ..' The success of the favourites came to an end inthe. Wharerangi Hack: Handicap, when the third both way selection, Slippery, beat the second favourite, Stitch," narrowly by a head, .with .the public's".-first 7choice, Courtyard, a'; poor. . third after a.disappointing-, showing. The winner, who had dead-heated for first with Good. Hunting at Trentham a; week earlier, led practically throughout, and he just held off Stitch, who was under the whip all the way. down the straight. The 1 other two runners were; well beaten. Slippery is a.black full-brother to.Royal Routine and TKoyal "Hunting, .and,'"'like" them, he possesses great pace' with an ability to stick on well when not pressed too severely. MIXED FORTUNE. The .Taradale, Highweight Handicap was one of mixed fortune for Mr. W. R. Kemball,.forjohe of his bracket;. Miss Hastings, .was ..to,, win,, -nd the.-, .other,.;;, Outward Bound,-was to' mccf 7fatal injuries. :'3_is_: . Hastings' -;Was.having her first start.since breaking, her nose; at. Woodyille in ._ ecember;;'and • she. caught' the public u.u----i awares.7 She came home fast to ciit down Sabatini.in the straight, and to beat ■fiin-:'tyy. a7h)hgth} aud;'a7'half .7 Mon Eoi was *a^like:;'distahe"e. 'away third,' and-.he was - followed by 7 Royal Songster, , Gold ; Ruler, and Goshawk." 7 Outward Bound, a .five-year-old'"-half-brother", by Cape Horn to Duo, Demagogue, _lka, Lysanias, and Gold Fit, all excellent performers, broke a leg two furlongs from home and , had to be destroyed. He had done little racing to date and had shown no form. He adds another to ,the big recent list of- fatal injuries ' met by horses raced by Mr. Keniball.N .•".'.' FAVOURITE'S SPRINT. Souchong, In spite of his big weight, was -,backed down to favouritism both ways' in the Flying Handicap, and his class carried him through. In a poor start he was not one of those to. suffer, and he was at. once out.'in front. Good Hunting soon joined him, and the pair left everything else. There was a great battle between them in the straight, the favourite always -holding the upper hand and just winning by a head. It was R. Reed's third win during/ the afternoon, two of them being by Very narrow margins. Good Hunting ran on solidly, and good sprints are likely to come his way before long. - ' . . . SPEED IN FORM. There were no defections from the New Napier Handicap, the whole field of fif- : teen, including many who had raced earlier . m the day, going the post. The Diaccmenod three-year-old Speed, who showed a;return to.his good juvenile form ■ : in winning, at .Asfyhurst last Monday, continued the improvement to score again at acceptable prices. He joined Wine Tray in .the lead at the turn, and in the run home he withstood a determined challenge from Princess Bell, who had always been one of the leaders, winning narrowly but meritoriously by a head. Golden Shadow was three lengths away in the'other place, and Wine Tray was fourth. RESULTS. IN DETAIL.
