SATURDAY'S RACES

BUCHOLZ CUP

A number of races'wore sailed in Evans Bay oh Saturday* afternoon. The most important was" that'for the Bucholz Cup, presented'by: Mr. :E::Buchol. and com 7 peted for for': the first time. The race for the cup, the keelers' -general handicap, was au excellent one, and-was won by the Ailsa, which started from scratch. .The Ailsa was"well sailed, and led all the way. The Galatea, Wairere 11, and Viola did not start OTHER EVENTS. The other events in some respects were disappointing. The fields were not large. The conditions were rather rough for good sailing, there being a strong wind, aud there was an unusual number of mishaps. After the race for the Buchol. Cup, most interest centred in the-7iß o na-Jellieoe boats' race, won by the Betty; which was sailed excellently and led all the way. The Diana pulled out in the first round because her peak-halliard' was carried away-.- -'-The Idono took a lot of watev in, but otherwise" did well. The race started at 3.10 p.m., the course being, from the starting line to the Slip buoy, to Shag Point buoy, to . the bathing sheds buoy, to the starting line, three times round. The Colleen was the winning boat, and was splendidly sailed by Evan Julian, who set a course by the shore and took advantage of what calm water there was. The Damfino, Mickey, and Flirt started, but did not finish. Tho Rob Roy met with trouble, but effected repairs and carried on, and, considering this, finished well. There was a fighting finish between the Spray and the Patsy.
