THE POPE'S DECREE
HOLY YEAR TO BEGIN
CEREMONY IN ROME
ROME, -lSth January. Tho Pope, sitting in the .Vatican throuo room, surrounded by prelate. and chamberlains in their vestments authorised tho publication of the Bull declaring a Holy Year, beginning from April. ■ ■. The Bull—an edict with a leaden seal attached to it—was then read to the large concourse of people from the piazza of St. Peters by the Dean of Prothonotaries, who occupied a special pulpit. Celebrations for Holy Year were given in full detail in the Bull, and it was announced that indulgences were availablo only in Rome, and pilgrima"cs to Palestine were urged. ° _ Holy Year is ushered in by the opening, of the-Holy Doors at the major basilicas. The most important ceremony takes place at St. Peter's, where tho Pope is carried in the Gesratorial chair from the' Sistino Chapel to the Holy Doors. Descending from his chair, the Pope taps three times on the doors with a golden hammer, and workmen immediately tear away the masonry, which is eagerly gathered up by the populace as relics. .........
