DAY IN PARLIAMENT

BANKS INDEMNITY BILL

When members of the House of Representatives adjourned at half-past five last evening for the week-end they had very little to show in the way of progress, and .present appearances are that the Banks Indemnity (Exchange) Bill which was introduced in the afternoon by Governor-General's \ Message, will not have an easy passage through the House.

It came as a surprise to many that members' of the Opposition did not avail themselves of the opportunities of debate on the introduction stage, but they will probably make up for their, silence on the second reading stage. The Bill is in .charge of the Minister of Finance (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coates) whose speech in moving the second reading occupied the best part of an hour. He was followed" by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland), who moved an amendment with the object of defeating the second Treading. He, too, spoke at considerable length and covered a wide range of subjects. After the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) had replied on behalf of the Government, the debato was adjourned until Tuesday afternoon.

At the morning sitting the leaders of the Coalition —tho Prime Minister (the Eight. Hon. G. W. Forbes) and the Minister of Finance—made statements setting out tho policy- of tho Government and indicating the serious position of tho country's finances.
