LICENSING OFFENCES
LIQUOR JO 'A MINOR
At the Magistrate's Court-to-day Sydney Roland Ellison pleaded guilty before Mr. E. Page, S.M., to a charge of sending a person undera the age of 21 to the Dominion Hotel for intoxicating liquor. It was.stated by the police that the defendant had sent an employee,.aged 18, to the hotel to get the liquor. The defendant explained that although he knew it was an offence for a minor to consume liquor on licensed premises, he did not know it was an offence .to get a minor to bring liquor-away from a hotel. The Magistrate ordered the defendant to pay costs amounting to 13s. The barman and the licensee of the Dominion Hotel, Thomas Moran and Thomas Kjchardson, were charged with • supplying liquor to a person apparently under the age of 21. Both pleaded not guilty. Messrs. D. McGrath and D. Perry, who appeared on their behalf, ' submitted that there was an element of doubt as to whether the boy, 'to whom the liquor har' been/supplied, was over 21. Actually his age was 18. After the boy had given evidence the Magistrate held that the barman should have come to the conclusion that he was under the age of 21. The barman was' fined £2, and the license, who was away from the hotel at the time, was convicted and discharged. A.fine of £3 and 10s costs was imposed on William Ayling for aiding and abetting in the unlawful supply. of liquor. after hours. Nelson MeKnight ,was fined £2 for being found unlawfully, on the premises of the New Zealander Hotel after hours. Bernard. H. J. Clark, Richard Hetherington,. Samuel Keech, and Arthur Thompson were each fined £2 for.being found unlawfully on the Clyde Quay Hotel premises after hours.
