WOMAN SENT TO GAOL

Gertrude Aileqn Taylor, aged 43, who pleaded guilty before Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon to two charges of false pretences and two of theft, was' sentenced to reformative detention for a period not exceeding two years. Detective-Sergeant Eovoll said that on Bth October the accused bought a sewing machine priced at £.23. She paid instalments amounting* to £14 13s 6d, and on 19th July she bought a similar machine from the same company, paying a small amount down and giving her, name as Mrs. Creigh. In the same month she. sold the first machine to an auctioneer for £5, and on 2nd August she ■ sold the second machine for £5 10s. On 19th November she. called at a, city warehouse, and on the representation that she was in business obtained a quantity of goods. She called again shortly afterwards, and obtained some more. The accused, said Mr. Revell, had been twice released <m probation in 1932 for a similar class of offence. , Counsel for the accused, Mr. A. B. Sievwright, said it was difficult to give any proper explanation for the conduct of the accused. He knew, however, that she had had a very distressful life owing to being deserted by her husband, arid had been left to bring up two young children. The Magistrate said it was quite 'evident that the accused had not responded to probation, and the only thing he could do, in the interest of herself arid the public, would be to sentence her to a term of reformative detention.
