WELLINGTON RACES

THE SUMMER MEETING

CUP DAY AT TRENTHAM

WIN-AND-PLACE BETTING

The Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting opened at; Trentham today in fine, pleasantly mild summer weather, with little sign left of the neavy rainHhat fell there on Tuesday and yesterday morning. The track was in perfect order for the time of the year, with' a thick sole of grass and • clover, and it provided ideal going, though possibly not as fast as in some other years when the surface has been rock hard. : J

The attendance early was quite satisfactory, and it continued to improve during the first two events. The public were highly interested in the, win-and-place totalisator, and the new system of betting did not appear to cause any special trouble to investors. The place pool was registered on all the electric faces, and the win pool was indicated on a special manual machine erected between the inside and outside faces on the ten-shilling totalisator house. In the results given below the order of favouritism is given for both the win and place pools, the win being shown first and the place afterwards. The following are the results up till time of going to press:— TRENTHAM. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of 160 soys; second 30 and third 15 ' from the stake; minimum weight 9st; one mile. I—l—G. W. New's eh g Beau Gallante by Top Gallant —Carmagnole, 4yrs, 10.7 (C. Thomson) 1 12—11— W. R. Kemball's eh f Cape Fair, by Cape Horn—Bag Fair, • 3yrs, 9.0 (P. Burgess) 2 B—B-^-Miss M. C. Wilson's b g Monastic, by Ponibal—Cowl, 4yrs, 10.1 (M. Kirwan) 3 Also started: 11-9 Juggle 10.8 (M. H. Nicol), 3 : 4. Saltpot 10.7 (E. Miles) ; - -5-5 Jayson- i 0.7 (H. Dulieu), 7-6 Nightguard 10.3 (H. Turner), 10-12 Palace 10.1 (P. Mcßreaty), 6-7 Blacksmith 10.1 (A. McDonald), 4-3 Clangor 9.7 (S. Anderson),- 12-13 Chile. 9.5 (C. Jarvis),- 9-10 Flower. 9.0 (D. O'Connor), 12-11 Golden Horn- 9.0 (A. Jenkins), 2-2 Chief Line- 9.0 (A. Ellis). Bracket: Cape Fair,, Golden Horn. Beau Gallante initiated the win-and-place betting at Trentham by being backed'down to almost ridiculously cramped odds on both machines in the Trentham Highweight Handicap, and duly winning with ease. After going a couple of furlongs Clangor and the favourite raced to the front and, crossing the top, they were well clear of Palace, Jayson, Monastic,. Saltpot, Chief Line, "Blacksmith, and Mghtguard. There was not much change at. the straight entrance except that Monastic-had gone up alongside Palace, and in' the run home Beau Gallante, hanging out, but always going easily, played with his challengers to. win by,a, length, from Cape Fair, who cams fast along the fence -to" deprive Monastic of second place by half a neck. Chief Line was a fair fourth, followed by Golden Horn, Blacksmith, Saltpot, Palace, and Flower. Nightguard, whp was left at the start, finished last. Time, lmin 41Jsec. ■' (Winner trained by owner, Awapuni.) Once again a favourite suffered a severe reverse in the Wellington Stakes when Diatomous' was beaten out of a place in' this year's field. Diatomous and Good Hunting were the first to show out with Lack, Midinette, and Guarantee all prominent, and, coming over on to the conrse proper Diatomous was clear of Good Hunting, Midinette, Guarantee, Lack, Fracas, and' Princess ■Doreen.. A" little further on Midinette threw out a challenge, and the favourite succumbed, but then Guarantee came fast over the final furlong, and he got up to- beat Midinette by a heck. Iwo lengths away Lack was third, with inflation a moderate fourth, followed by .Diatomous, Good Hunting, and Princess Doreen. Time, 59|see. _■■ (Winner trained by C. Gieseler : '■-.■- Wingatui.) . With Golden Hair declining Porotiti was backed down to a- hot favourito straight-out, also being first choico on the place machine, and he carried his supporters through, but only by a narrow margin over Pegged'Exchange'and Lady Nan. The last-named was the first to show out, and she piloted the way on to the course proper from Porotiti, Bon Rapide, Catalogue, Pegged Exchange, and Sweet Agnes closest of the others. Porotiti and Lady Nan settled down to a hard fight, then Pegged Exchange came through in challenge and -though he'failed to catch the favourite by a neck, he got up to beat Lady Nan by a head. Sweet Agnes was running on strongly fourth just ahead of Bon Rapide, with Safari, Catalogue, and Hint well clear of the others. Time, 60} see. (Winner trained by F. Tilley, Fordell.)
