EMPIRE TRADE

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION

CANADA'S INITIATIVE

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. OTTAWA, 15th January. The Canadian Government is corresponding with various Governments in the Empire with a view to organing a Committee to meet in London to study means of further developing economic co-operation within the Empire.

Each State will have two representatives. An announcement of the personnel is expected soon. It is understood the Canadian Government has been in communication with the New Zealand Government with a view to furthering the Ottawa discussions and to carrying a stage further the negotiations for the expansion of intra-Imperial trade. Any conference which might take place in London will not involve the departure from New Zealand of a member of the Cabinet, as the Canadian Government's suggestion is interpreted as meaning that^ official representatives of the British and Dominions Governments would take part in the discussions and not members of the Governments concerned.

If the conference materialises, New Zealand will most likely be represented by the High Commissioner in London, Sir Thomas Wilford, and he will probably nominate those who will be associated with him. They will no doubt include the London representatives of the Meat, Dairy, Fruit and Honey Boards. From what 'can be gathered, the meeting which Canada desires to convene 'will deal -.purely •with trade matters and not with questions of Imperial policy such as Ministerial representatives were called upon to decide at the Imperial Conference at Ottawa.

It was felt when the various agreements w.ere made at the conference that it might be necessary to bold another meeting of trade representatives early this year, and there is every likelihood that Canada's suggestion will bo adopted. Any such conference will concern itself with trade relations, more particularly as they apply to separate divisions of Empire commerce, with a view to making more effective and elastic, though a mutual understanding, the agreements reached between Great Britain and the Dominions.
