CRICKET MATCH RESULTS

The. warm days at the weekend took many people into the country; districts, .and.large crowds.have patronised Tahuna beach. The bathing shed* yesterday had a record day for this season and -. completed a 1 record weel£, as hundreds of swimmers have been, flocking to the beach each evening.

Members of the teachers' summer school on Saturday ; went for an all* day motor trip to Golden' Bay back. They inspected the marble' deposits on the Takaka ■ hill', and. after "lunching ,on the beautiful Bohard beach-inspected the Terakohe cement-works and visited the PaPu springs. It;was one of Nelson's best summer days and "a magnificent view of Tasman Bay ,was seen from Kairuru, near the summit of the Takaka hill (2595 ft), \ - . - '

On Saturday a Wellington Aero Club machine piloted by Mr. K. Aridersoa came to Nelson, with another Wellington pilot, Mr, K. Smith,- as a passenger. It was intended to return t» "Wellington yesterday,. but' "owing to an unfavourable weather report from. Ttongotai the return was made this morning, Mr. Smith piloting the machine. .

The first Newman Shield challenge cricket match -was played at "Wakefield between Nelson and Waimea.. Waimea, holders of the trophy, made 205 in their first innings, mainly as the result of solid innings by Morgan and Hasler, who scored 59 and 51 respectively. J. Newman, took four wickets for 64 runs and Freeman three for 73. Nelson's first innings produced 270 runs, allthe batsmen except one reaching double figures—Neale 30, A.: Newman .21, J. Newman 37, Stewart 30, Karsten 20, T. Ralfe 28, Miincaster 27, and Freeman 25 not out. B. Davies took three wickets for 36 runs. "Waimea on the second day made 181, Morgan contributing a well : made 68 and Davies. 35. Freeman, the slow spin bowler, was very successful with the ball, taking five wickets for 37 runs off fifteen overs. Nelson required 117 to win, and got them with the loss of eight wickets. \'B. Ealfe played a; valuable inning's for 46 not out. Davies took three wickets foi 49 runs and Giblin three* for 37.

In the senior cricket matches on Saturday Athletic failed by 12 to reach the total •£ 270 compiled in the first innings by Old Boys' colts, who thus ■won. on the first innings. The outstanding feature of Athletics innings was a sound 76 scored by H. M. McGirr. V. Biggs scored 4i,, Vasta 22, Delaney 29, and T. Louisson 32.n0t out. Wakatu. defeated Old Boys by ten wickets. Old Boys had made 108 and. Wakatu re,plied with 279. . Old Boys in their second innings made 215, mainly as a result of a splendid century innings by S. Newman. After reaching 50 he went for the bowling, and his scored of 101 included two 6's. and thirteen 4's. Busch played well for 39 and Eckloff scored 36. Searell was the most successful bowler, taking four wickets for 17 runs. Kinzett (22) an! N. Biggs (23) scored the necessary runs for "Wakatu without the loss of a wicket.
