MASSED BANDS

BASIN RESERVE CONCERT

A highly successful concert given by the Port Nicholson, Artillery, Boys' Institute, and Highland Pipe Bands, in conjunction with the band of the Young Australia League, was attended by between eight and ten thousand people at the Basin Keserve yesterday afternoon. The bands assembled outside the De Luxe Theatre, and the Boys' Institute Band led-oft, followed by the Artillery Band and the Highland Pipe Band at intervals of five minutes. The Port Nicholson Band waited for the boys' band, which marched from the Town Hall, and then played the visitors to the Basin Reserve. The boys waited in Dufferin street while the Port Nicholson Band joined the other bands in massed formation in front of the stand. While the boys' band marched in, the combined bands, under the leadership of Captain T. Herd, played the "Colonel Bogey" march. The Boys' Institute Band played a selection, after which the Port Nicholson Band gave an exhibition of the quickstep as it will be performed at Dunedin in the Dominion contest. Before marching off, the Port Nicholson Band was inspected by little Charlie Stanton, the eight-year-old drum major of the boys' band, and the thorough manner in which he did the inspection was watched with interest by the crowd. The Artillery Band played the accompaniment "Old Memories." valsette, and the boys' band did flank-to-flank counter marching in smart style; and played two marches, "Invercarcill" and "Colonel Bogey." A cornet solo, "Beyond the "Dawn" (Sanderson), was played by Sergeaut W. H. Bowman, with accompaniment T}y the Artillery Band. The Highland Pipe Band gave a selection, .and the Port Nicholson Band played the "Victory" selection by Cyril Jenkins. The National Anthem was played by the Artillery Band. The proceeds of the concert were in aid of the funds of the Wellington Brass Bands' Association and the Mayor's Relief Fund.
