CAPSIZE OF CANOE

{By Telegraph.) (Special to ''The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, 14th January. A long tramp by ,thi;ee miners from Greymouth to North Auckland in search of work had a tragic sequel this afternoon, when John Youngston, aged--24, a single'man, was drowned in the Awanui Eiver, North Auckland, through the capsize of a canoe of which he was an occupant.

Mr. Youngston, in company with two other miners, set out on foot from Greymouth recently in search of work. One of the party secured work at Hikurangi, and the others, John Youngston and John Kelly, proceeded north.

When in the vicinity to-day of the old lime works which adjoin the Awanui River, the two men secured a canvas canoe, and paddled into mid-river. The boat suddenly capsized and the occupants were thrown into the water. The- deceased, who was unable to swim, was assisted by bis companion, who' became exhausted and had to release his hold. He just managed to struggle to the shore, and called for assistance. Mr. Brunton, who was in the vicinity, immediately stripped, dived into the river, and recovered the body. Constable M. Thomell.and E: Backley, of Kaitaia, and Dr. Clarke, of Pukepoto, were summoned, and artificial respiration was applied without avail.
