DISASTER AVERTED

ENGLAND'S RECOVERY

LEYLAND AND WYATT IN FORM

A SPLENDID PARTNERSHIP

United Prcs3 Association—By Electric TeleEraph—Copyright ADELAIDE, 13th January. England made a disastrous start in the third Test match, which opened today, losing three wickets for 10 runs in three-quarters of an hour. Wall was the hero. Jardino lasted twenty minutes, Wall completely beating the captain. Till then Sutcliffie had not scored, and was playing a very scratchy innings. His first effective shot was to squareleg for 2, Ponsford saving a few feet from the boundary.' Suteliffe then snicked 3 off O'Reilly. Wall had Hammond guessing with his paey deliveries. A no-ball kicked ■ up, and Hammond, dodging, fluked a single, and then tipped the next ball, which Oldfield safely held. This was the last ball of Wall's sixth over. His figures now were two for 16. England was thus in a parlous position. A further sensation immediately followed, O'Beilly making a confident appeal for log-before against SutclifEe, which was disallowed. Suteliffe was playing very tamely, scoring only 9 in" forty-five minutes. He got no further, Wall, at mid-on, making a brilliant catch. He stretched on the ground full length, ana took tho ball barely off the grass. It was an amazing effort. Leyland joined Ames, and the former hit the first 4 of the match, swinging an easy one to the leg-ss,de, off O'Reilly. Ames, in attempting a similar hit off a no-ball, knocked his wicket down. . Ironmonger replaced Wall, who had taken three wickets for 26. In his fourth over Ames" played ovef a shortpitched one which took the middle stump. .^Grinimett's first over was a maiden. In the next Leyland drove hard to the off-side through Ponsford's hands for 4. ■ ■ .' . ' At lunch the score stood at four for 37, Wall's figures now being 12 overs,' 5 maidens, 2 wickets, 12 runs.

A SOUND PARTNERSHIP,

Leyland and Wyatt soon got the mastery, •both waiting for the right balls. Leyland was delightful on the leg side, and with Wyatt made a sound partnership. Grimmett got one within inches of Leyland's; wicket when he was 32. Leyland then hit successive 4's off Ironmonger. Wyatt was aggressive, hitting one to square-leg for 6 off Grimmett, one to fineleg for -4 off Ironmonger, and another powerful hit to square-leg for 6 off Grimmett. The slow bowlers were becoming a luxury. McCabe replaced Ironmonger at 103. Leyland was now 52, arid straight drove Grimmett for successive 4's. Fortyfive had been knocked off Grimmett, who was replaced by O'Eeilly, but the scoring went on unabated. Wyatt secured his'so in 100 minutes by superlative play. Wall came back at 142. MeCabe, in the slips, missed a hot catch from. Wyatt, who reached 61 by square-legging Wall' for another sixer, his third. Leyland was just as confident, waiting for loose ones. At tea the score stood at four for 154 (Wyatt 61, Leyland 68), the batsmen saving England from an ugly situation. "I have never seen Wall bowl as fast as he did in the opening overs to-day " said Clem Hill. . , DEBACLE STEMMED. There were repeated leg-before appeals by O'EeiUy, but Wyatt and Ley^ land remained uneonquered either way. The former, making beautiful' leg swings, reached. 70 by a leg shot off Wall for 4. Leyland appreciated Ironmonger, driving., him for 4 and reaching 83. Facing O'Eeilly, Leyland was completely beaten in the next over. His was a bright patch, unquestionably stemming the early debacle. Leyland batted for 181 minutes, hit thirteen. 4's, and was never uneasy. Five wickets were down for 186 when Paynter made his Australian Test debut. Wyatt soon followed Leyland, hitting Grimmett straight to Richardson at long-off after reaching 78. Grimmett's only wicket fell at a cost ,of 54 runs. Wyatt showed dogged and sound defence, combined with aggression. -He batted for 2 hours 45 mm-> utes. The score was now six wickets for 196.
