"THE GUIDES' HOLIDAY"

(Original.)' "Hurrah," cried the Northampton. Guides. Their captain had just told them that they were going to camp in. a little wood near Boxburg, which was about thirty miles away from Northampton. The Guides were wildly excited. It would be their first camp, as the company had only been formed six months ago. There were three patrols—the "Poppy," "Daisy," and "Curlew." Peggy, the "Curlew" patrol leader, cried out, '' Three cheers for captain!" N The Guides played some games and then wore dismissed. All the way home that night the Guides were discussing the forthcoming. event. Buth,. the "Poppy". patrol Second and her friend Doreen (also of the "Poppy" patrol) were nearly dancing home that night, they were so excited. They had never been. for a holiday, as their parents could not afford the railway fares. ''Won't it be fun?" said Euth. - "I wonder what it will be lite." "Sipping," asserted Doreen. "Fancy sleeping in. a tent!" Then they separated at Buth's gate.' The next few days were filled with packing. As Euth stood on the platform on the "going-away" day, she -wa« overflowing with happiness. ' Two weeks in the open! The thought thrilled her, as it did the other .Guides. It seemed ages to the waiting girls before- tb»

train came in, but at. last it arrived. As .they clambered into the carriage, which was reserved for them, /peopl-a looked at them arid smiled and.iemarked: "What a fine set of girls they are!" - It was not »very long before they reached ,Eoxbuig, and. as they got off the train they into lines b£ two deep and marched to the.camping spot. It was a pretty little clearing, sheltered on each side by big oak trees. Through the- net-work of, the trees* leaves could be seen a river, winding its way through the beautiful English countryside. » After resting for awhile the Guides set about putting up the tents. Euth, Doreen, and two other girls, Molly, and Laura, were putting up a tent when without warning it collapsed upon them! Molly arid Laura were completely buried in it. Kuth'and Doreen being more fortunate, had just missed being covered. They stood,- bursting with laughter, while Laura and Molly- strove to get out. When, they did get out they shook their fists at the tent and proceeded' to ,put it up again. This they managed to do without it falling again. The two weeks seemed to fly. Every, morning the Guides went for a swim in.' the river, and came-back with an ap- ,> petite for food. They, went- for long tramps over the hills. They visited the Cathedral, and they-were amazed at the lovely, ancient architecture. .When the; last day arrived, there was not a girl in tne set of Guides who did no rt f wish" she- could haye" the* fortnight over again. ~ ./---V "MUSTAED".
